What does trauma informed yoga mean?

Trauma-informed yoga is a specialized approach to yoga that is designed to create a safe, supportive, and empowering environment for individuals who have experienced any type of trauma. It acknowledges the impact of trauma on the body and mind and adapts traditional yoga practices to be more accessible and less triggering for those with a history of trauma, PTSD, anxiety, or other challenges.

Key Principles of Trauma-Informed Yoga
  1. Choice & Empowerment
    • Encourages students to listen to their own bodies and make choices that feel safe for them.
    • No forced postures or adjustments—participants are given options rather than rigid instructions.
  2. Safety & Comfort
    • Instructors create a predictable, welcoming environment.
    • Classes may avoid loud music, intense physical adjustments, or triggering language to promote a sense of safety.
  3. Mind-Body Awareness & Regulation
    • Emphasizes breathing techniques, grounding exercises, and slow movements to help regulate the nervous system.
    • Helps individuals reconnect with their bodies in a non-threatening way, which is especially helpful for those who feel disconnected due to trauma.
  4. No Pressure or Judgment
    • Focuses on how movements feel rather than achieving perfect poses.
    • Participants are encouraged to take breaks, modify postures, or even leave the class if needed.
  5. Avoiding Triggers
    • Uses neutral, non-authoritative language (e.g., “You’re welcome to try this if it feels right for you” instead of “Do this pose”).
    • May avoid certain positions or breathing techniques that can feel overwhelming for trauma survivors.
How Trauma-Informed Yoga Helps
  • Reduces stress, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms
  • Improves self-awareness and emotional regulation
  • Builds a sense of empowerment and control
  • Encourages safe reconnection with the body

Is It Right for You?
If you've experienced trauma and find traditional yoga overwhelming or uncomfortable, trauma-informed yoga might be a good fit. It’s especially helpful for those with PTSD, anxiety, or a history of emotional, physical, or sexual trauma. Many trauma therapists recommend it as a complementary practice alongside therapy.
