5 Traditional Chinese Medicine Tips to Transition into Fall

9/22/2025

As the seasons shift, so do our bodies. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), fall is associated with the lung and large intestine meridians, the metal element, and qualities of dryness and contraction. It’s a time to turn inward, conserve energy, and prepare for the colder months ahead. By aligning with seasonal rhythms, we can strengthen immunity, support emotional balance, and maintain vitality.

Here are five TCM-inspired tips to help you transition smoothly into autumn:

1. Nourish the Lungs with Moistening Foods
The dryness of fall can easily irritate the lungs and throat, leading to coughs, dryness, or skin issues. To counteract this, include foods that moisten and nourish yin:
  • Pears, apples, and persimmons
  • Honey and almonds
  • White fungus (snow mushroom) soup
  • Root vegetables like carrots and daikon
Warm, cooked meals are preferred over raw salads this time of year to support digestion and warmth.

2. Support Immunity with Warming Herbs & Teas
Fall is flu season in TCM as well as modern medicine. Herbal allies can fortify your defenses:
  • Astragalus (Huang Qi): builds immune strength and qi.
  • Ginger and cinnamon teas: gently warm the body and disperse cold.
  • Licorice root: harmonizes and supports lung health.
Our qualified TCM practitioners, Jin and Laetitia, are happy to make tailored recommendations to better support immunity. Please be sure to consult a qualified practitioner before beginning new herbs, especially if on medications.

3. Breathe Deeply & Practice Qigong
Because the lungs are the organ of fall, breathing practices are especially beneficial now. Daily qigong, tai chi, or mindful breathing exercises strengthen lung qi, improve circulation, and help release lingering grief or sadness—the emotions associated with the metal element.

Try stepping outside in crisp morning air for a few minutes of slow, intentional breathing.
4. Align Your Routine with the Season
In TCM, fall encourages us to slow down and conserve energy. Go to bed earlier, wake with the sun, and create space for reflection. Journaling, meditation, or even a simple gratitude practice helps align your inner rhythm with the season of letting go.

5. Protect Against the Cold & Wind
Sudden chills and wind are thought to “invade” the body, weakening immunity. To protect yourself:
  • Wear scarves to shield the neck (a vulnerable point in TCM).
  • Dress in light layers as temperatures fluctuate.
  • Avoid sitting in direct drafts.

These simple steps can prevent the common colds that often strike in early autumn.

Fall is a season of transition—both in nature and within ourselves.
